I enjoyed working with the General Manager. She was wonderful and created a nurturing environment for employees to be successful and have a good work life balance. She promoted relationship selling and because of these efforts I was highly successful.

If you're lucky with good management

Overall, the company is great. I loved working for Marriott and would happily work for the company again. That said, you do need to be very lucky with management. There is good and bad management everywhere, and I was very fortunate to have amazing, supportive supervisors. Advancement is what you make it but it can be hard sometimes as it's very competitive. They do offer great pay for the hospitality industry but it could always be better for the amount of work you really do.

It is a great place to work!!

Working as a Sales Manager at Marriott requires professional dress, image and attitude. Our clients, although, were very down-to-earth and enjoyable to work with, The management and staff of the hotel was also very down-to-earth and very family oriented.

Work hard, do the time. Growth potential, amazing Staff

The culture is vibrant!! I felt proud to work here. Guests come in all shapes and sizes, largely due to the Convention center. Corporate business is heavy thru the week, with several meetings almost all year round.Social events such as sports, comic conventions, music festivals, Weddings, reunions enjoy the downtown area packed full with bars and restaurants. The front desk stations stay full due to the wide range of business. The restaurant RYE stays busiest during the evenings with corporate travelers Mon thru Thur. Whereas, leisure guests including locals attend RYE Fri thru Sun. mornings. Overall, the entire hotel stays busy besides some summer weeks and the 3rd week of Dec. This offers a unique opportunity for anyone. They take good care of their staff. Be prepared to be busy and learn a lot!

Pros

Cafeteria lunch, great staff, they promote from within, good pay

Cons

Benefits constantly changing, pay to park due to location being owned by the city, heavy traffic, road closures during big events

Job is okay

Some employees were a pain to work with just made it more difficult to work. Besides that, the rest of staff was great & helpful. Company in general is awesome had great benefits(depending on property). Pay was okay but could have been better for the work and stress levels you deal with. Would definitely recommend to work for company in general.

Not enough recognition

The property unfortunately has no structure or training for empowering employees to go the extra mile. Micromanaged by GM & DOS old school method....

Austin Marriott South is dwendling

I worked here for a few years and this is a great training grounds for anyone wanting to get into the hotel industry. This hotel though does stand on the side of the highway and is seen as a hotel that does just that.

Opportunity to grow

Marriott hotels are often franchised. Each hotel can be managed by different owners or management companies. I was lucky to work under Pyramid Hotel Group at Marriott Mobile. A new owner, Ascent Hospitality, purchased the hotel and they were one of the worst management companies or employers that I have ever worked for. Disorganized, arrogant, and an adversarial relationship with employees. Ascent's philosophy is to manage by intimidation instead of build a team who loves their job, guests, and company. They can't keep employees or managers because hospitality comes from grace and joy, not from misery and fear. Ascent's benefits are the worst I have ever had at a company. No one, not even managers qualify for benefits till 90 days, and they are poor benefits. No dental or vision, only medical that is not worth the money it costs. They have a very limited vacation and personal time off policy which starts after one year. They took over the hotel and all employees who had been there, some for over 15 years, went back to being a day one employee with no vacation or benefits. I highly recommend working for Pyramid Hotel Group. You work hard and long hours, with not much work life balance, however you are rewarded for it and given bonuses for achievement. They know how to develop a team, and promote from within. They develop the employee with training from outside companies as well as monthly internet virtual classes. Run away from Ascent. I would rate them with one star in all categories. Do not frustrate yourself working there. No one remains there, not even -

Pros

bonuses, celebration of success, free lunch, travel discounts

Cons

no work life balance

Big company with a wide variety of employees and managers

Overall, Marriott is a generally good company to work for. They put effort into quality of work life, health and wellness and employee satisfaction. However, hospitality is a low paying field and Marriott doesn't pay the highest within that field. Pay tends to be too low for cost of living. The management teams can be good but can also be terrible. It really depends on the property. In one property, you can find an extremely wide variety of personalities, motivations and quality of leaders. However, if you're lower down the ladder, Marriott encourages movement into different departments and provides good pre-leadership training.

Pros

Management is encouraged to treat staff (parties, cookies, etc.)

Cons

Pay for parking at large hotels, pay for lunches, generally low pay due to industry, cut-throat and leaders can be discouraging

Marriott Owned Properties

I have worked for both Marriott owned and Franchise properties, and I highly recommend Marriott owned. Marriott holds the associates in leadership/management positions to high standards, which in turn makes leaders hold associates to high standards. They definitely take care of their associates and the associates in turn take care of the guests.
