As the title suggests, the benefits are great, however work life balance for maintenance crew is just not there. You're constantly scheduled for weekends. Randomly chosen to go tdy(travel in us). Manning is constantly an issue. Politics, leadership is a revolving door, and sometimes you get someone who cares more about their rank than about their team, creating random rules/requirements, etc, to be able to mention it when it comes time for their evaluations.
Pros
Housing, medical
Cons
Politics, leadership, bureaucracy, work-life balance

Phenomenal opportunities, excellent benefits, lots of camaraderie, solid education, great guidance on advancement. Has an evolving organizational culture, moving in the right direction, will likely take another generational cycle to truly realize many deep, needed changes. Those entering now or in the near future have the chance to make huge strides in areas of organizational thinking and environment.

It’s the military. Could have been worse but overall a good springboard for the rest of your life. If you save money and find a good mentor you can get a lot out of your time in. The work culture in my career field, maintenance, wasn’t the best.

The greatest family unit you will be a part of is a tight nit Unit or Squadron that has a great culture beginning with the CC. I was lucky to work and deploy with some of the greatest people I have ever met in my life.

Obviously, any military role will be very involved. I think the Air Force is the best of the 4 services because of the amount of training and responsibility it gives to members. The focus on knowledge and programs was a plus because that enabled its members. The camaraderie and crew concept is something you won't see in the civilian world. This experience will change how you see life in general. The down side is that performance reports are far too administratively focused and rigid rather than giving an accurate snapshot of performance. This matters because promotions for officers rely heavily on how someone appears on paper. The so-called fast-burners are identified way too early and tend to be very poor leaders who are more focused on, you guessed it, how they appear on paper rather than true leadership qualities. I have seen good leaders, but many unit-level leaders in command really disappointed me, and many were the so-called fast burners. Some of these experiences really choked the morale out of a squadron because unlike the civilian world, people can't just quit, at least not in a traditional way, so many leadership abuses were more egregious because attrition couldn't happen like it does in the civilian world, so the problems grew bigger before getting noticed. I have seen very good leaders too though. I just think the Air Force Culture needs to change performance reviews, both for officers and enlisted. I've seen Army and Marines performance reviews, and they seem far more accurate; reviewers seem to give an accurate depiction of their troops rather than playing formatting - more...

Politics and favoritism for promotions. The Air Force is all day, everyday of the year for service members and families. Do have a sense of comraderie because of this though. Pay and benefits are outstanding.

Great culture to grow in. Many benefits to help grow in professional and personal goals. As with any job you can have great and poor leaders. However with the nature of the job and rotating positions it is manageable. It's up to you to learn from the good and bad of an organization.
Pros
Great Benefits
Cons
Work life balance can be a chore at times.

Normally positive, sometimes challenging, I learn something new every day. I have learned, how to improve my skills with people and technology as a manager and team member. Upper level management is always interested in improvement in the technology in the work place and improvement of education in their people. The workplace culture, has a large no. in diversity in individuals from all places of the world with background, education & experiences. The hardest part is making time for improvement. Most enjoyable part , is making improvements in the programs for quality, time and saving funds for new & advanced programs.
Pros
Are the Advancement
Cons
Benefits, and I like to travel in my job

As an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force my daily job duties were challenging while also offering something new everyday. Workplace culture is definitely what you make of it. You can either love it or hate it. I guess it depends on what career field you are in.
Pros
Career progression, pay and benifits.
Cons
Lack of leadership in the lower levels, treated badly, horrible hours

The job itself was enjoyable. Loaded ammunition on aircraft and troubleshooted the jets. The problem is your supervisor who will show preference to other employees because they might be funny or they just get a long. Women are treated better than the men. There aren't many to go around so your superiors will definitely play favorites with them.
Pros
Job security, opportunity for advancement, healthcare
Cons
Work Culture, favoritism, politics, unprofessional

First two years working for U.S Air Force very difficult. Your rank determines how one treats you. Work environment all depends on what job you've chosen. Work place culture consists of people "bleeding blue" or hard core patriots who live and breathe the military
Pros
Great benefits, all federal holidays off, chance to save up vacation days or "leave"
Cons
a lot of micromanagement, poor leadership, supervisors often abuse their power, never ending workload, very stressful

Serving is more than a career. It is a culture. Many of the people you work with are great and become a secondary family. Locations are global and you can serve fulltime (active) or part time (reserve\guard). I was both active and reserve and enjoyed both. Great benefits, solid training, great people overall, stability and purpose. Unfortunately, the cons are limited opportunities for advancement once you reach a certain point, archaic enlisted/officer structure where the divide prevents true leaders from elevating the enterprise, innovative ideas are often capped by rank, workload (position dependent) and moving at the speed of government bureaucracy. Much of this is career field/location specific but if you want to serve, best branch in DOD. If you join, take advantage of the benefits!
Pros
Training, stability, benefits, camraderie
Cons
Management structure and selection process, bureaucracy, occassional favortism

I spent 21 years on Active Duty Air Force as an aircraft electrician and environmental systems specialist. Yes, it is demanding and tough but the benefits, culture, and ability to see the world was worth everything.
Pros
Culture, relationships, rewarding work
Cons
you are a military member 24/7, and if you're not willing to commit to that it can be pretty rough
